For mechanical designers:
do not plan a new one without knowledge of existing systems

A new mechanical system can only be accurately designed if the existing state is known in full depth. In reality, the available design documentation is often incomplete, outdated, or no longer reflects the systems actually built. The design is based on assumptions, which subsequently leads to collisions, extra work and extra costs. Accurate assessment of existing mechanical networks is not an extra step, but a prerequisite for sound design.

The challenge: unknown existing machinery

A mechanical designer is caught between two things if in an existing building works:

No data: there is no documentation of the existing mechanical systems, or what is there is is outdated. The designer makes an estimate based on the site walk-in.

Collision is revealed late: the new system collides with the existing pipeline, air duct or cable duct, but this becomes visible only when it is dismantled or installed. At this time, it is already necessary to redesign, dismantle, build.

Collision is the most costly type of construction defect in mechanical engineering. Fixing a collision that turns out to be detected in one place costs 10-100 times more than if it were filtered out in the model.

A 3D laser scanning records visible mechanical elements with an accuracy of a couple of millimeters. Prepared from the mechanical survey LOD 300 BIM Model the starting point of the design.

What do you get from the survey?

Point cloud

Geometry of the entire space, including accessible mechanical elements. A point cloud can be imported into the design software and used as a reference in addition to your own design.

Online viewer

The location can be retrieved at any time in the browser-based viewer. A 360 panoramic photos are suitable for identifying materials and colors: what you can not see from the point cloud, the photo shows.

BIM model (e.g. LOD 300), optional

With our Scan-to-BIM service, we model the mechanical elements separately: pipelines by diameter and material, air ducts, cable channels, fittings. Each element is a separate object that you can work with directly in the design software.

2D designs, optional

On request: sections and floor plans for the design with the indication of the mechanical elements.

Collision test, optional

Comparison of the surveyed existing engineering with the new design. Result of the crash test: impact report by type (geometric, clearance, MEP-MEP, MEP structure).

Collision testing for mechanical engineering

From the design point of view of the mechanic, the main thing is:

The existing systems surveyed and the planned new elements can be compared in the BIM model.

Collisions can be automatically filtered out: physical collisions, too short distances, mountability problems.

The result is a crash report, categorized by type and severity.

Typical projects

HVAC retrofit

New air conditioning system for existing office building. Without knowledge of the existing air duct network, structural elements and pipelines, the design is carried out blindly. The survey will give you the “map”.

Designing a new system for an existing building

Design of a complete mechanical system based on the existing geometry surveyed. The BIM model includes the structure and the existing engineering, the new system is built on this.

Pipeline modernization

Documentation of existing pipelines, design of new routes. The point cloud shows where the existing pipes run and where there is room for the new one.

MEP documentation

Fixing existing machinery for operational use. Documentation prepared for the investor or operator, which is the basis for maintenance plans and future conversions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What mechanical elements can you assess?

All visible MEP elements: air ducts, pipelines, cable channels, sprinkler, gas pipeline, fittings. Elements recessed into the wall or completely hidden cannot be fixed with the laser scanner. In the case of a suspended ceiling, it is possible to assess the parts above it.

What is LOD 300 in MEP?

Mechanical elements (pipes, air ducts, cable ducts) are modeled separately, with diameter, material, direction. This is the level from which collision testing and detailed design can be carried out.

How does it fit into my own MEP plan?

The surveyed data is delivered in.ifc or native format (Revit, AutoCAD). It can be combined directly with your own design in the design software, and the collision test can be run from there.

How much does a mechanical survey cost?

The price depends on the size of the area, the complexity of the mechanization and the required LOD level. We make an individual offer.

In what software do I get the BIM model?

According to your software: Revit, AutoCAD, MagiCAD, DDS-CAD. It is also provided in an open.ifc format.
